▼ East Asian High Schooler Illustration Contest

Since it's so difficult to travel internationally nowadays, the International East Asian High Schooler Public Exhibition, which is an illustration contest held by pixiv and the Kyoto University of Art and Design, is being revived digitally. It was previously held 6 times and accepted more than 16,000 entries. It aims to be a digital and creative exchange among the young people of East Asia.

The contest theme is "my daily life".
It should feature your daily life now or at some point in the past.
We hope to get many entries that convey peeks of daily life over great distances, and the emotions that go with them.
Please feel free to enter!

The level of skill is undeniable, but the theme is also beautifully captured.
It doesn't just convey the seriousness of studies and the immense pressure of exams,
it also manages to express a sense of comedy as well.

▼Seiji Yoshida
It has an impressively dynamic composition.
Despite not including the subject's expression, the student still feels very much alive and you get a sense of their reality.

The colors and design layout is gorgeous, and even though each part of the work is different, the work in its entirety has a wonderful composition. In every way, this is a modernistic work appropriate for this contest. It values the individual style of the artist, and we get a good sense of the amount of effort put into it. We look forward to seeing how this creator grows and develops.
The prominent window grate is drawn rather charmingly.
The attention to lighting, among other details, makes this a very careful depiction of a living space.
The background scenery is clearly based in reality, and it almost makes me want to visit.
Award of Excellence
Prize: a 10,000 JPY (approx. 100 USD) Amazon gift card
This artwork features a lot of finesse in technique. The shifted perspective shows off the dynamic atmosphere, and the balance of this entire work is incredibly masterful in how its created points of interest. It's in the way the artist used lighting, the placement of prominent objects, and the like.
There were plenty of ways the theme for this contest was depicted, but this one really stood out. The background scenery is actually other drawings, and the inclusion of a suitcase really conveys a strong desire for life after COVID-19 passes. The sheer amount of information packed into this artwork did bother me a bit, but I think the amount of information included can be a weapon of sorts, I'd like to tell them to make the most of it.
This artwork is proficient in its depiction of objects, and it makes careful use of lines. Frankly, they're so good, I'm not entirely sure how they did it. (lol) If they considered adding another subject or figuring out some way to add a bit of story into the work, I think it would really expand on the worldbuilding.
The character's expression is very alive. Between the title and the serious expression of the subject, I almost found myself chuckling at how clearly they managed to convey the situation. If they're this serious about something like this, you find yourself wondering if they have a date or some errand where they have to stand before others. It's a wonderful artwork that sparks the imagination.
It's a liberating artpiece that sticks in the mind. They managed to aptly capture it with an above perspective composition, which can be difficult. Their understand of building perspective is high, and it speaks to their level of technical capability. Unfortunately, it needs a few finishing touches in processing.
This artwork showcases the artist's outside-of-the-box thinking and their skill. They drew a calmer everyday scene of an extraordinary magical world. I think their use of color, light, and character expression splendidly depicts these points.
▼Comments from the judges

▼The Kyoto University of Art and Design
All the submitted works were of such an incredible quality that it was very difficult to pick a winner. It was actually hard to believe that all the artworks are from high schoolers. We definitely hope that all the participants will take our entrance exam! Each work had its own appeal, so we don't want anyone who didn't win to feel discouraged. Please, keep creating!

▼Seiji Yoshida
The focus of this contest was on East Asia, but all the works were at such a high level that it was hard to narrow things down. Due to COVID-19, there were a lot of desk-oriented illustrations and so I thought it was easy for the compositions to get monotonous. Whether it be through better ideas or throwing your effort into finding the best situation, you may find yourself drawing closer to victory if you decide your own method of taking on a challenge like this. No, rather than setting a prize as your goal, I think I want you to focus on aiming for the way you want your skills to develop.

All winning works will be put on display at
the Kyoto University of Art and Design's Open House 2021 on April 24th (Sat) and 25th (Sun), 2021.
