年少の女子。普通、7歳前後から18歳前後までの、成年に達しない女子をさす。乙女(小学館『大辞泉』より)。法律的には児童福祉法で小学1年生～17歳、民法で18歳未満、少年法で20歳未満の女の子を指す。 律令制下では数え年17歳～20歳(満年齢15歳～19歳)の女性を少女と称した。 日本産業規格における少女の定義は「身長の成長が止まっていない乳幼児以外の女子」であり各種法律と違い年齢による上限は決まっていない。
