Greetings from pixiv.
Starting mid-November 2024, we’ll be introducing a new “Display works that may contain sensitive content” option in pixiv’s browsing settings.
*Update on November 18th: The rollout of this update began on November 18th, 2024.
With this addition, you'll be able to choose whether to display not only works labeled R-18 (sexually explicit content) or R-18G (grotesque content) but also works that might not need age restrictions but could still include sensitive content.
On November 5th, 2024, we updated our guidelines to reflect these changes.
We’ve also added a feature that allows creators to preview how their works appear with these new settings.
Below, you’ll find more details on the purpose of this update, an overview of the “Display works that may contain sensitive content” option, and what you should keep in mind when posting or viewing works.
■ Purpose of this update
Our goal at pixiv is to create a service that anyone can use comfortably anytime, anywhere.
As more people browse pixiv on their smartphones, many have expressed a desire to view pixiv content on the go, even in public spaces.
This new setting lets you customize what content you view based on your preferences and where you're browsing pixiv.
By implementing this feature, we aim to provide a safer and more flexible space where both viewers and creators can enjoy pixiv’s content with peace of mind.
This update does not restrict the ability to post works with certain types of content.
■ Overview of the “Display works that may contain sensitive content” option
Enabling the display of potentially sensitive content allows you to view works as before.
However, if you choose to hide potentially sensitive content, the content you view will change on specific pages as follows.
On the works page
Works with potentially sensitive content will appear blurred.
You can reveal the work by pressing the Show button.
On the main pages (e.g. search results, Discovery page)
Potentially sensitive content will not be displayed.
On other pages (e.g. Latest by followed, Bookmarks, Rankings)
The thumbnails of works with potentially sensitive content will appear blurred.
On a creator's profile page
Potentially sensitive content will not be displayed.
To view all posts, you can temporarily reveal these works by pressing the Show button at the bottom of the page.
■ For creators
How a work is displayed depends on the viewer's “Display works that may contain sensitive content” settings and the rating assigned to the work.
These ratings can be set by the creator or by pixiv, based on our Guidelines.
Illustrations, manga, and Ugoira will be flagged as potentially containing sensitive content if they meet one of both of the following criteria:
- pixiv determines that the work contains potentially sensitive content based on the criteria outlined in our guidelines
- The creator selects the "slightly sexual content" box when posting
*Age-restricted works (R-18, R-18G) will continue to require setting by the creator upon posting. There will be no change to these criteria.
We have updated our guidelines to clarify our definition of “works that may contain sensitive content”.
Here are the details of the update.
- Added a section titled “About work ratings”
- Included criteria for rating works that may contain sensitive content
- Moved some descriptions of age-restricted works to the “About work ratings” section
Starting today, in preparation for the mid-November 2024 feature release, ratings will be assigned to previously posted illustrations, manga, and Ugoira. You can check these ratings on your dashboard's Works tab. Ratings for future posts will continue to be added.
Read on to learn how to check the ratings assigned to your works.
How to check the ratings assigned to your works
If you believe the rating assigned to your work is incorrect...
If you believe the rating assigned to your work is incorrect, you can request a reevaluation.
Just go to the rating section on your dashboard and click or tap on "Request reevaluation".
We will review your request and adjust the rating as needed.

■ For viewers
The “Display works that may contain sensitive content” option will become available starting mid-November 2024.
*Update on November 18th: The rollout of this update began on November 18th, 2024.
These will be the default settings upon release:
- If you chose NOT to display sexually explicit content (R-18)
- The “Display works that may contain sensitive content” option will be off, so you will NOT display potentially sensitive content either.
- If you chose to display sexually explicit content (R-18)
- The “Display works that may contain sensitive content” option will be on, so you will also display potentially sensitive content.
If these settings don't align with your preferences, you can check and adjust them at any time after release.
On the desktop and mobile versions of pixiv
- Log into pixiv and go to Settings > Display settings.
- Select the range of content you wish to display.
On the pixiv app
You cannot change these settings within the app.
Use a browser on either desktop or mobile to access pixiv and change your settings.
Due to app store guidelines, those who chose not to display R-18 content would not display works with sensitive content within the app. This remains unchanged after the release, regardless of whether you choose to display potentially sensitive content.
However, we are planning a future update to allow you to display sensitive content in accordance with the new settings, even if you have chosen not to display R-18 content.
*Update on November 18th: With this release, we have updated the feature so that when the "Display works that may contain sensitive content" option is enabled on the desktop or mobile browser versions of pixiv, these works will also be displayed in the app.
Thank you for your continued patronage with pixiv.
